MENOMONIE — Several area locals recently participated in the Special Olympics Wisconsin “Freezin for a Reason” Polar Plunge at Elk Point Resort in Menomonie on Saturday, February 8.
Last year, over 200 people took the plunge, which raised more than $30,000 for Special Olympics Wisconsin.
This year for the fifth annual Plunge, the number of teams and jumpers increased and over $50,000 was raised.
The “Top Fundraiser” out of the entire group of more than 200 people was Boyceville’s own Rochelle Olson.
She raised over $2,000, which also helped her Tiffany Creek Elementary Bulldog’s team become the “Top Team” as well.
Out of 38 teams, their team of nine collected donations and raised over $5,000 and they were awarded t-shirts and a free shuttle bus ride to the lake.
Finishing as the second top fundraising team was Papa’s Plungers, a group put together by Papa’s Bar and Grill in Forest.
Their team had a goal of recruiting ten people and raising $1,000, but they went above and beyond. There were over 20 people that plunged into the icy water and they raised just over $4,000.
