Schaffer dies in Barron County crash

A Barron County traffic crash has claimed the life of a recent Boyceville High School graduate.

18-year-old Kiandra “Kia” A. Schaffer, a 2013 Boyceville graduate and former resident, died at the scene of the crash after  she was ejected from the truck she was driving and was pinned underneath it following a two-vehicle accident Friday afternoon, January 10.

The incident occurred around 2:15 pm last Friday on State Highway 48 about one mile south of the unincorporated Barron County community of Mikana, located about 12 miles northeast of Rice Lake.

Details of the accident released by the Wisconsin State Patrol reported that Schaffer, driving a 2003 Ford F250 pick-up truck, had been attempting to pass a 2002 Ford Explorer, while both vehicles were eastbound on STH 48 when the accident occurred. Apparently, the right rear portion of the F250 truck Schaffer was driving made contact with the left front portion of the Ford Explorer causing both vehicles to lose control, leave the roadway and overturn.

Schaffer was not belted and was thrown from the truck during the collision and sustained fatal injuries.

The two occupants of the Ford Explorer, 57-year-old driver Vernon A. Forde of Sugarland, TX and his 53-year-old passenger Annette M. Gorius from Anamosa, IA were both wearing seat belts and were not seriously injured in the crash.

The Wisconsin State Patrol-Northwest Region, which was assisted by the Barron County Sheriff’s Department and the Birchwood area Fire and EMS, reported that the crash is being investigated and reconstructed.

Kiandra or Kia as she was called by family and friends, graduated from Boyceville High School last May where she was active in the high school dance squad, cheerleading, choir and softball.

Schaffer had recently moved to the Rice Lake area where she was employed at Kohl’s Department Store and Applebee’s Restaurant. She had plans to begin her education toward a degree in Mortuary Science later this year, an interest she had acquired after “job shadowing” at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie this past summer.

Kiandra is the daughter of Becky Fasbender of Menomonie and Terry Schaffer of Clayton.
