LOREN R. SLIND

Loren Slind, 83, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 10, 2013 after a lengthy battle with lung and heart disease; he was lovingly cared for by his wife Mary.

Loren Roland Slind was born December 25, 1929 in Downing, Wisconsin to Eddie and Gladys (Marlett) Slind.  He graduated from Boyceville High School in 1948, and enlisted in the Navy a few days later.  He served aboard the USS Missouri for 3 ½ years as a storekeeper.  He was honorably discharged in May, 1951.  Loren worked at various jobs and finally as a machinist at Honeywell in Minneapolis.  After being laid off from there he went to Greenland and worked on Thule Air Force Base as a heavy equipment operator for six months.  After returning from Greenland he worked at General Trading in St Paul until 1962, when he decided to try his hand at farming.  Once retired from the farm, Loren worked for Indianhead Enterprises, in Menomonie for eleven years.

He married Mary Hintz, daughter of Edward and Ruth (Reinecke) Hintz, on May 12, 1962 and built their life of 51 years of marriage together having three children, Daniel, Julie and Jeanette.  Loren loved his animals and was an excellent farmer.  He did everything to the best of his ability and encouraged his children and grandchildren to do likewise.  Any stray animal had a home with Loren.  He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and loved watching them grow up.  He especially enjoyed their school and 4-H activities.  He served on Trinity Lutheran church council and was an active church member until his health would no longer allow him to do so.

Loren is survived by his wife Mary, children Daniel (Cheryl) of Baldwin, Julie (Nick) Schommer of Hager City, and Jeanette Amundson of Chippewa Falls; grandchildren Meegan Amundson, Courtney (fiancé Nick Stowell) Amundson, Mitchell (girlfriend McKayla Wink) and Micheala Slind; one brother Doug Slind, sisters-in-law Marilyn Slind and Norma Slind Williams; brother-in-law Robert (Louetta) Hintz, and Aunt Lucille Marlett; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents Eddie & Gladys (Marlett) Slind, brothers Melvin, Gerald and son-in-law Roger Amundson.

A celebration of Loren’s life will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14 at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boyceville, with visitation one hour prior to service.  Burial will be in the Mound Cemetery in Downing, Wisconsin.
