MENOMONIE — More than 70 works of art by University of Wisconsin-Stout students will be on display throughout the summer on campus.
Visions, a juried year-end student show at Furlong Gallery, includes 73 items by 51 students.
Furlong Gallery, in Micheels Hall, is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
The show’s pieces were selected by juror Jerry Allen Gilmore, a St. Paul artist, from a pool of about 200 works submitted by students.
“Within this exhibition there is the acute presence of observation, representation and wonderful interpretation,” Gilmore said. “I am witness to beautiful hand-held objects, to even more intimate miniatures and sweeping large scale works of art, some striking a political and social content that reference a slice from art history while others reflect and demonstrate clear visions of the artist.”
Gilmore picked the painting “Something Quiet,” by Julia King, a senior from Minneapolis, as Best of Show. King received a $100 grand prize.
Taking first places were:
• Ceramics: Dane Hodges, of Hudson
• Drawing: Angela Gauger, of Milton
• Metals: Katelyn Marusak, of Boyceville
• Painting: Sam Weinberg, of Edina, Minn.
• Printmaking: Kristen Rokenbrodt, Chippewa Falls
• Sculpture: Lisa Krasse, Oshkosh
Honorable mention awards went to Emily Dillhunt, of Rochester, Minn., self-portrait; and Raine Nimmer, of Green Bay, enamel pin.
Prizes for first places and honorable mentions were supplied by Mike’s Art Supply, Johnny Lunchbox and Legacy Chocolates.
Students were allowed to enter up to three pieces or sets. Two students, Hodges and Gauger, had all three of their entries accepted.
The show mostly features works by students in the School of Art and Design, but it also includes pieces by students who took a studio art class as an elective.
The School of Art and Design offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in entertainment design; graphic design and interactive media; fine arts; industrial design; and interior design. For more information, go to www.uwstout.edu/artdes.
