10 years ago – June 11, 2003

After defeating Cameron 11-8, the Colfax baseball team lost the sectional championship game 12-10 to Hurley. It appeared Colfax had taken a 10-9 lead against Hurley in the sixth inning on a two run homerun by Kyle Sikora but a controversial call stating a Colfax runner missed third base ahead of him took a run away and ended the inning.

Elk Mound freshman Hayley Suckow won a third place medal in the 400 m dash and a sixth place medal in the pole vault at the WIAA State Track and Field meet. Megan Krumrie was also sixth in the long jump.

The Colfax Free Fair will make its 84th run June 12-15.

25 years ago – June 9, 1988

The Elk Mound softball team blasted Colfax 16-6 in tournament play as Lisa Morris and Colleen Heimstead both had two hits and three RBIs for the Mounders while Tina Nelson led the Vikings with a double to bring in three runs. Nelson was the only Colfax player named to the All Conference team while Heimstead, Morris and Jennifer Rhude were named to the team for Elk Mound.

Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Fjelsted (Babe and Tippy) of Colfax will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary June 25 at the Viking Bowl.

Alton R. and Gulinda Christopherson of Elk Mound will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house June 12 at the Big Elk Creek Lutheran Church.

35 years ago – June 15, 1978

Katherine Knutson and Larry Froseth exchanged vows of matrimony May 13 at Holden Lutheran Church.

The Colfax baseball team lost in the first round of the Class C state baseball tournament 2-1 to Hillsboro. Craig Johnson and Jay Miller had the only hits of the game for the Vikings.

An open house in honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hattery will take place June 17 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Wheeler.

50 years ago – June 13, 1963

A daughter Joni Kay, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Prince June 7 at Luther Hospital.

Bonnie Jean Grambo and Reuben C. Knutson were married June 1 at St. Katherine Evangelical Lutheran Church, Beyer Settlement.

Sandra Jeannine Puhl and David Charles Franzen were united in marriage May 31 at Colfax Lutheran Church.

Wedding vows took place between Patricia Dahlgren and Ronald Solberg June 1 in the Church of God in Eau Claire.

Colfax Lutheran Church was the scene for the wedding of Suzanne Larson and Donald Kolek on June 1.

65 years ago – June 17, 1948

A special two day program has been arranged for the 90th anniversary of the Big Elk Creek Church June 19 and 20.

Miss Delores Lorraine Bateman and Clifford Anley Moen were married June 12 at Holden Lutheran Church.

Sgt. Phillip Rublee, 338th Reconnaissance Squadron (VLR) Mapping, Clark Air Force Base, has been promoted to the grade of Staff Sergeant.

Miss Phyllis Cardin and Emil Sarauer were married at St. Paul’s Church in Bloomer June 15.

100 years ago – June 27, 1913

Harry Lewis, a boy 18 years of age, was drowned in Hay River, only a few rods from his home at about 1 o’clock last Thursday.

At the residence of Mr. and Mrs. D.P. Card, three miles northwest of the village Wednesday evening, occurred the marriage of their daughter Jesse Alta to George Burling.

Joseph Newton Walls, a Civil War veteran who fought for the Southern Army against his five brothers, passed away June 20 after a long siege of Asthma. He leaves behind three daughters, Mrs. Frank Freestone and Mrs. William Lowrey of Colfax and Mrs. George Scovell of Bloomer.
