10 years ago – June 4, 2003

A son, Zackery Richard Hill, was born April 27 at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire to Gary and Christie Hill of Colfax.

Lauren Castillo (800 m run) and Denise Kragness (discus) both placed second at the sectional track meet to qualify for the state meet along with Hannah Moen who took fourth in the high jump.

Elk Mound will be represented by several girls at the state track meet including Megan Krumrie in the long jump, triple jump and two relay teams, and Hayley Suckow and Alecia Ellingstad in the pole vault competition.

Ashley Myers, an eighth grade student at Elk Mound Middle School shot a 22 ½ pound gobbler in her first experience at turkey hunting May 21.

25 years ago – June 2, 1988

Top ten students for the Colfax High School Class of 1988 were Karin Fodness, Todd Grossnickle, Lara Bohnen, Sue Schindler, Gina Klukas, Cindy Larson, Todd Berge, Aaron Wagner, Scott Bennesch and Greg Albricht.

A wedding dance and reception for Audrey Peterson and Bruce Goss will take place June 4 at the Viking Bowl.

An Open House for the 90th birthday of Nora Pooler will be held June 5 at the Colfax Area Nursing Home.

35 years ago – June 8, 1978

The Colfax baseball team will head to the state tournament after they won their second straight sectional championship with a win over Mellon 13-6. Colfax defeated Winter 6-5 in the sectional semi-final and prior to that won the regional championship with a 3-2 win over Prescott.

Mrs. Phillip Williamson, Jr. (nee Kathleen Larson) of Milwaukee gave birth to a baby girl June 5.

Dana Lausted, age 21 of Route 2, Colfax was killed in a one car accident one mile south of his residence June 1.

Mark Lofthus placed third in the discus throw and fifth in the shot put while Jerry Marko was fourth in the pole vault and fifth in the 440 yard dash at the sectional track meet, ending the season for both athletes.

50 years ago – June 6, 1963

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith of Milwaukee on Sunday at St. Luke’s Hospital, Milwaukee.

Members of the Colfax Educational Association honored two retiring teachers, Mrs. Ella Bird and Frederick Leach. After teaching in seven different districts, Leach spent the last four years of his career as the junior high principal in Colfax.

Gust Johannesson and Christ Anderson left Colfax on Monday for New York, where they departed by boat for Norway to spend an indefinite time with friends and relatives.

65 years ago – June 10, 1948

Colfax lost in baseball action to Boyceville 11-5 last Sunday. Gordon Gilberts led Colfax in hitting with three safeties in five times at bat. Fans did not support the team very well as a gate of only $47.00 was reported.

Rex Gassen of Colfax won the Expert Bowman Division at the Red Cedar Bowman meet held in Colfax. Earl Hammer of Colfax won the Bowman Division and Lyle Teppen, also of Colfax won the Junior Division.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer M. Christianson, along with 125 of their family and friends celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at their home Sunday afternoon.

100 years ago – June 13, 1913

Miss Anna Johnson of Colfax, Dunn County, who has gained national fame as “Wisconsin’s Helen Keller” by her marvelous accomplishments in pursuing her education in face of the handicap of being blind, deaf and dumb, graduated June 10 from the Wisconsin School for the Deaf at Delavan in a class of five students.

A large silo on the John Hill farm southwest of town was blown off its foundation in the windstorm Tuesday evening.
