10 years ago – March 19, 2003

A son, Roush Robert Voldberg, was born March 6 to Kassie and Travis Voldberg of Colfax at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.

A son, Luke Joseph Collins, was born Feb. 19 to Geoff anf Renee Collins, Sacramento, Calif. Local great-grandmother is Herma Larson.

An agreement with Timber Technologies, LLC, concerning the sale of the commercial building in the industrial park was approved by the Colfax village board of trustees.

Pat Lindgren was the All Events winner in the Colfax Men’s Bowling Association annual city tournament held at the Viking Bowl. Tim Kiekhafer won the singles event while Gary Bjork and “Big Al” Kruger won the doubles.

25 years ago – March 17, 1988

The Elk Mound girls ended their season at the WIAA state tournament with a first round loss to Fall Creek in the Class C Division 77-52. Colleen Heimstead ended her high school career for the Mounders with 2002 points before fouling out with one minute left in the third quarter.

Dennis and Michelle Maukstad, Eau Claire, are the parents of a girl, Jessica Dawn, born March 9 at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire.

The Colfax boys lost to Prentice in the regional championship game 55-47 as six seniors ended their high school careers for the Vikings including Jim Dobbs, Todd Kragness, Charlie DeLorge, Willie Lange, Greg Albricht and Keith Knutson.

35 years ago – March 23, 1978

STATE CHAMPS! – The Colfax boys defeated Coleman 62-58 in the semi-final game and Pardeeville 75-61 in the championship game to claim the WIAA Class C championship at the Wisconsin Fieldhouse in Madison. Steve Obermueller set a Class C scoring record with 43 points in the two games and was named to the All Tournament team while Mark Lofthus and Jay Miller were chosen for the Class C All Tournament team.

The wedding of Arlis Soppeland and David Larson took place at North Running Valley Lutheran Church in Colfax March 10.

Mr. and Mrs. Mark Dobbs of Colfax have announced the birth of a son, Mathew Alan, March 19 at Memorial Hospital in Menomonie.

A son named Chad Allan was born to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Ewings of Cornell March 14 at Bloomer Hospital.

50 years ago – March 21, 1963

Mr. and Mrs Russell Helberg are the parents of a son born March 16 at Bloomer Memorial Hospital. He has been named Steven Russell.

Sleet, snow and rain were all part of the weather menu in the past few days.Thunder and lightning were also evident as a large bolt of lightning struck the Frank Henderson farm just south of Colfax. Mike Henderson was doing the barn chores when the bolt hit the barn and he was knocked down along with 10 cows. Luckily, neither Mike or the cows were injured.

Final arrangements are being made for the distribution of the Sabin Oral Polio vaccine in the Colfax community and at the high school.

65 years ago – March 25, 1948

Members of the Colfax FFA male quartet won the sectional contest in Eau Claire. Members include Lewis Lausted, Keith Tryggestad, Wayne Bartilson, and Wesley Lausted. Elsa Moe was their accompanist.

Dunn county conservation warden H. B. Apel, age 42, died suddenly of a heart ailment Sunday at his home in Menomonie. Apel would have completed 20 years of service with the conservation department in June, replacing his father in the position in 1928.

At the capping exercise for the Luther Hospital School of Nursing in Eau Claire March 12, Miss Clara Hattery from Wheeler was one of 30 students to be honored.

100 years ago – March 28,1913

Dr. Hart, the local veterinarian, was called twice during the past week to look after sickness among hogs on the farm of Robert Middlstad, where several hogs had died. Tests from the hogs were sent to Madison and it was determined it was hog cholera which caused the deaths.

Mrs. Swen Swendsen (formerly Olson) died at her home in Running Valley March 20 of dropsy at age 72.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Gullickson at Sand Creek on Easter Sunday.
