CUMBERLAND — It’s a result that neither the Boyceville wrestling team nor its fans are accustomed to seeing.
Although the Bulldogs received perfect performances from state placewinners Brock Schlough, Tretton Joles and newcomer Josiah Berg, all of whom finished 4-0, it wasn’t enough to overcome Boyceville’s mat youth and inexperience, forfeits and some very strong competition as the squad went winless in its season-opener at the Island City Duals in Cumberland last Friday evening, November 30.
The Bulldogs, who forfeited three weight classes all evening, finished the tournament 0-4 after dropping matches to Baldwin-Woodville (51-14), St. Croix Falls (51-18), River Falls (48-29) and host Cumberland (49-30).
The efforts of Boyceville’s three undefeated wrestlers had to provide a silver lining and some solace for the team and coaches Jamie Olson and Corey Day.
Senior and three-time defending state titlist Brock Schlough kicked off his farewell season with impressive work at 160 and 170 pounds. He won by a fall, technical fall and injury default at 170 pounds and registered a pin in his only match at 160.
Trett Joles, who finished third at last year’s state tournament as a freshman, opened with a 11-5 decision over Baldwin-Woodville’s Blaine Guthrie at 195 pounds. He then posted pins in his next three bouts, all at 182 pounds.
Freshman Josiah Berg’s high school and varsity debut was also impressive. Like Joles, Berg began with a 15-9 decision over Walker Langer of Baldwin-Woodville at 113 pounds and then rang up pins in his next three consecutive matches.
Senior Nick Goodell and freshman Ira Bialzik both finished the competition at 2-2. Goodell had won a decision at 145 and a technical fall at 152 pounds while Bialzik came home with a pair of pins at 132 pounds following his first varsity tournament.
Tyler Dormanen was the only other Bulldog to cop a win, going 1-3 while splitting time at 145 and 152 pounds with Bialzik.
Dominic Schreiber (220/195) and Keegan Plemon (285/220) finished 0-3. Eli Swanson (126), Nate Stuart (138) and Taylor Schmid (160) each finished 0-4.
Boyceville will head to another challenging tournament this coming weekend when it travels to Wisconsin Dells for the Dells Duals held Saturday, December 8 at the Chula Vista Resort.
