Bulldogs stung by Hornets in 71-45 loss at home

BOYCEVILLE — There is only one reaction to an attack from a big, black and yellow bug: Ouch.

The exclamation seems to fit perfectly as a response to the Boyceville boys’ basketball team’s January 8 home contest against non-conference foe Cadott. The Bulldogs walked away licking their sting marks after suffering a 71-45 defeat at the hands of the Cadott Hornets.

[emember_protected] “We started the game OK, but we were worn down by the depth and multiple guys that can score for them (Cadott),” Boyceville head coach Ben Luer said later. “Defensively, they are hard to match up with because they can penetrate and finish shots. If you zone them, they can shoot well too. They definitely have a dual threat.”

The Hornets have an 8-2 record overall, and Luer said he understood why, since Cadott seems to have a multitude of players capable of putting up points. The Boyceville coach noted the Hornets present as a quicker, more athletic team than most others the Bulldogs would face.

The home team trailed by just nine points, 32-23, at halftime, but seemed to have difficulty finding good looks in the final 18 minutes.

Meanwhile, the visiting Cadott boys seemingly found opportunity after opportunity and had good enough position to capitalize as the Hornets out scored their hosts by 17 points, 39-22, in the second half.

Senior Luke Knudtson edged out classmate and teammate Bryce Boda with 19 points over Boda’s total of 18, who scored four of the Bulldogs’ five three-point makes. Knudtson had the other.

But neither was able to equal Cadott’s Mason Poehls, who reeled in 23 points which included six three-pointers to take the game’s highest score. Teammate Garrett Roth chipped in for another 16 points in the Hornet victory.

Boyceville junior Jaden Reisimer took credit for four points in the game, and Logan Knudtson and Jayson Gonzales each scored two points.

Last week’s loss dropped the Bulldogs to 3-7 overall, and the team remained winless in the Dunn-St. Croix at the start of this week. The Bulldogs hosted Durand January 16 before heading to Spring Valley January 19. The team plays in Glenwood City next Tuesday, January 23 in a match-up rescheduled from January 11 due to weather.
