Lady Mounders bump off Buffaloes

In their only match of the week, the Elk Mound volleyball team recovered from a slow start to take a four set win over the visiting Mondovi Buffaloes Sept. 22. The conference win kept the Mounders undefeated at 3-0 for the season.

Elk Mound dropped the first set 21-25 but came back with a vengeance to sweep the next three 25-12, 25-15 and 25-11. Hannah Flatness  had a huge night as she slammed 20 of the Mounder’s 44 kills in the game to go with eight by Morgan Radtke, seven from Allie Weber and six from Serena Wieser. Flatness also contributed by blocking four Buffalo shots and serving a pair of aces and Radtke added a couple of blocks. Madysen Borofka set her teammates up 22 times and Kari Jo Nigon finished with 18 assists, and the back row was busy saving points as Wieser collected 25 digs, Abbey Olsen and Wieser both finished with 14 and Nigon added 10.

“We didn’t come ready to play in the first game and struggled to make plays,” Mounder coach Sam Weix said. “In the second game, the girls found some fire on offense behind the strength of Hannah Flatness and things started to click. She was our go-to girl all night but that also opened up some offensive opportunities for our other hitters. It was great to pull the win off but if we are going to win games down the road, we have to find a way to show up ready to play and not take a set off,” she added.

The Mounders will continue in conference play with a home match Sept. 29 against Plum City then will play at Durand Sept. 1.
