Area trio claims conference titles at Dunn-St. Croix track and field meet

COLFAX — Sophomore Cassie Malean led Boyceville with a pair of individual championships at the 2015 Dunn-St. Croix Conference track and field meet held Tuesday, May 19 in Colfax while Glenwood City’s Todd Petersen and Rachel Klatt each won titles for the Hilltoppers.

Malean captured gold in both the high jump and long jump and added points in the 200 meters to help the Boyceville girls to a fifth place finish – the highest among the four area teams.

The Lady Bulldogs scored 63 points and their male counterparts finished in eighth (last) place with 40 points.

Both Hilltoppers’ teams came in seventh. The girls’ squad, behind strong finishes in all four relay events including a first in the 4 x 400 meters,  scored 55.5 points compared to the 44 points that the boys’ team posted.

St. Croix Central ran away with another boys’ title outscoring runner-up Elk Mound 161 to 117.5. Mondovi claimed the girls’ championship  with 133.5 points, edging out host Colfax by seven points.

Malean, who secured Boyceville’s only first-place finishes in the conference meet, led the Bulldogs on the track and in the field.

The talented Ms. Malean won her second straight conference high jump title clearing 5’ 1” just an inch below her gold medal effort from a year ago.

Cassie jumped 16’ even in the long jump to add a second title to her medal tally besting teammate Erica Sempf who finished in second place with a jump of 15’ even. Malean also placed fourth in the 200 meters in :28.25 after she had qualified fourth with a time of :27.94. She also qualified sixth in the 100 meter preliminary but had a no time in the finals.

Brooklyn Booth took a second for Boyceville in the pole vault as she cleared 7’ 6”, a foot off the winning vault by Elmwood-Plum City’s Jillian Holt. Teammate Emma Harnisch placed fourth in the event  with a vault of 6 6”.

The Boyceville girls also had a pair of point-getters in the discus throw. Freshman Haley Wold throw 91’ 9” to take third while fellow freshman Paulina Wenke throw the discus 89’ 1” to finish sixth.

All four of the Boyceville girls’ relays scored points. The 4 x 100, 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 all finished seventh and the 4 x 800 squad was eighth.

Rachel Klatt scored the Glenwood City girls lone individual championship. The junior sent the shot put 36’ 9” to win her second straight conference title in the event, besting the nearest competitor by over two and a half feet. Klatt just finished out of the points in the discus, where she took ninth.

The Topper girls excelled in the relay events at Colfax last Tuesday.

Glenwood City capped the meet with a championship run in the 4 x 400 meter relay event. Senior Jennifer Kopacz along with juniors Maya Petersen, Gabby Peterson, and Morgan Kadinger turned in a winning time of 4:27.57.

The 4 x 100  and 4 x 200 teams both took second and the 4 x 800 squad was third.

Mariah Voeltz was joined by Gabby Peterson, Kopacz and Kadinger on the 4 x 100 while Gabby Peterson, Maya Petersen, Macie Rasmussen and Megan Speiser ran the 4 x 200. Kaitlin Konder and Makayla O’Brien along with Kopacz and Kadinger comprised the 4 x 800 team.

Maya Petersen, Morgan Kadinger, Kaitlin Konder and Mariah Voeltz also scored points in individual events. Kadinger finished in a fifth-place tie in the high jump, Kaitlin Konder shared a three-way tie for sixth place in the pole vault and Mariah Voeltz was sixth in the long jump. Maya Petersen ran and jumped to seventh in the 100 meter high hurdles.

The Petersens’ hurdling abilities were also on display in the boys’ 110 meter highs. Maya’s older sibling, senior Todd Petersen, won the event in a time of :16.67, bettering his top qualifying time of :17.04. It was the Glenwood City boys’ lone conference victory.

Todd also competed and placed in the long jump, taking home seventh.

Fellow senior Marcus Kadinger scored in three events at Colfax. He sprinted the 400 meters in :54.11 to take second and followed with a sixth in the 800 meters. Marcus also scored a seventh in the high jump.

The Hilltopper boys also grabbed points in the four relay events, finishing fourth in the 4 x 800, fifth in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 and eighth in the 4 x 400.

Seniors Logan McAbee-Thomas and Mitch Pustol had the top individual finishes for the Boyceville boys team.

McAbee-Thomas took third in the 400 meters (:54.70) and the triple jump (39’ 1”, which was nearly three feet less than his top qualifying jump) and was seventh in the shot put.

Pustol ran a 4:50.76 to finish third in the 1,600 meters and placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.46.

Tyler Krueger was fourth in the pole vault.

Caleb Arndt finished fifth in the discus for the  Bulldogs.
