Simonson wins conference championship, Colfax-Bloomer teams places seventh

SPOONER -— Led by junior Brady Simonson’s second conference championship in three years (he won as a freshman and took third last year), the Colfax-Bloomer wrestling team placed seventh of the nine teams in the Heart O’ North Conference tournament held in Spooner Feb. 7.

Simonson scored 25 of  C-B’s 91 points by winning his first match at 126 pounds by a fall at 0:42, then took his second round match also by a fall at 3:13. He then won the championship match with a 22-9 major decision over Nick Long of Superior.

Competing at 182 pounds, Brady Hetke was the runner up after winning his first two matches by pins then losing the championship match by fall at 1:15 to Mitchell Wozniak of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser-Prairie Farm. Placing fourth were Jacob Malinowski at 113 pounds and Justin Wachtendonk at 120. Malinowski lost his first match, won the next two then dropped the third place match in sudden victory to Sam Peters of C-W-PF. Wachtendonk also lost his first match, came back to win the next two before dropping the match for third place by a fall to Brandon Olson of Superior.

Fifth places were earned by Jarrod Kressin at 132 pounds and Jon Hayton at 145. Kressin won two matches and lost two then won the fifth place match by a fall at 1:39 against Luke Jarman of Northwestern. Hayton lost his first match, won the second by a fall at 3:28, then after losing due to an injury, came back to win the fifth place match with a pin over Alex Meyers of Barron at 1:51.

Eric Wachtendonk was the only other C-B wrestler to earn points by placing sixth at 190 pounds with one win and two losses before dropping the fifth place match by a pin at 3:24 to James Ringer of Barron. Tyler Stoll at 138 pounds, Collin Bungartz at 152 pounds and Zack Arvold at 160 pounds did not place.
