St. Croix County Register of Deeds, Beth Pabst cautions citizens to beware of businesses that want to assist you in obtaining copies of your records. Several St. Croix County residents have recently received letters from companies which offer to help obtain grant deeds. Companies like this are very bold and indicate that you must comply and respond by a certain date.
“Buying or refinancing a house is a huge endeavor with plenty of paperwork. Part of this paperwork is often a copy of the deed to the property. Sometimes however, a recorded copy of the final deed does not get included. If not, the Register of Deeds Office can supply you with the copy for a fee that is usually $2 to $3 depending on the number of pages,” Pabst said. “These companies that want to assist you are willing to get you a copy of the same deed for the fee of $83. That’s quite a profit since they merely contact us and we provide the same copy for $2 or $3.”
“Unfortunately, what these companies are doing is not illegal. They are charging customers for the service of obtaining the copy. The citizens of our community do not need to use these services to obtain their records,” Pabst said. “Your records are available immediately at the Register of Deeds Office in Hudson at a fraction of the cost.”
