Mounders drop season opener to Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Bulldogs

It appears Elk Mound head coach Dave Lew will have to wait to claim his first victory as head coach for the Mounders as his team suffered a 34-0 loss at the hands of the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Bulldogs on the road Aug. 23.

Adam Gottschalk picked off a C-W pass in the first quarter but the Mounders couldn’t take advantage of it and the quarter ended in a scoreless tie. The Bulldogs erupted for 22 points in the second quarter to take a big lead into the half. Both defenses played pretty solid in the third with neither tean able to cross the goaline, but the Bulldogs finished the game off with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns.

Mounder quarterback Travis Nelson completed nine of 17 passes for 55 yards with three completions to both Gottschalk and Jon Storing. Derrick Redwine led Elk Mound in rushing yards with 48 on 18 carries and Zach Mohr added 22 yards on nine attempts.

“We are a young team trying to find our way,” Lew said. “A couple of mistakes in the first half put us behind. Redwine and Mohr ran hard and the rest of the team played hard. We just need to get more intense and tackle better,” he added.

Elk Mound will play host to Eleva-Strum this Thursday. The Cardinals are coming off a loss to Colfax.
