Lady Mounders take pair of conference wins

Playing their second and third games in a seven game home stand, the Elk Mound girls took care of some Dunn-St. Croix Conference business as they posted wins over Elmwood Jan. 22 by a score of 48-31 and squashed St. Croix Central three days later 66-39.The wins made it three in a row for the Mounders, bringing their overall record to 13-3 and conference record to 8-3.

Josie Hayes and Kaysi Meindel combined for 31 of the Mounder’s 48 points, accounting for all 12 in the first quarter with Hayes picking up 10 of them for a 12-6 lead. Meindel added seven second quarter points to go with a Hayes bucket and a pair of free tosses by Jamie Solem to put them up 23-12 at the intermission.

If the game wasn’t put away yet, it certainly was after the third stanza when the Mounders poured in 17 points, courtesy of six more from Meindel, three from Mattie Pitts on a shot from long range and two points each by Emma Hayes, Josie Hayes and McKenna McVey. The defense held the Raiders to under 10 points for the third straight quarter, allowing just nine and with a 40-21 lead, they coasted through the final quarter for the win.

“We took care of the ball and ran our offense very well,” coach Jordan Kongshaug said. “It was a good win for us.”

Josie Hayes finished with 16 points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots, and Meindel added 15 points. Emma Hayes led the team in assists with four. Josie Hayes continues to lead the D-SC in scoring with a 16.4 average while Meindel is third at 11.8.

The dynamic due of Josie Hayes and Meindel again teamed up to lead the Mounders in the scoring department, combining for 46 points as Hayes picked up 26 of them. Elk Mound scored 19 points in each of the first two quarters and held a 38-22 lead at the break and continued to find the net as they came up with 16 in the third stanza while holding the Panthers to just six, allowing them to put the game away again before the fourth quarter even began.

McVey also finished in double digit scoring with 14 points and grabbed a team high 11 boards for the Mounders, while Solem  led in assists with six.
