By LeAnn R. Ralph

COLFAX — Two candidates have filed nomination papers for Colfax village president by the extended deadline of Monday, January 7, at 5 p.m.

Village trustees Chris Olson and Scott Gunnufson both filed nomination papers for village president to be elected April 2 with the correct number of verified signatures by the 5 p.m. deadline on Monday, said Jackie Ponto, village administrator clerk-treasurer.

Gary Stene, incumbent village president, did not file notification of non-candidacy for the village president position by the January 2 deadline, which extended the filing deadline until January 7.

Gunnufson and Olson also both filed nomination papers by the January 2 deadline for the village trustee positions they currently hold.

The positions held by village trustees Beverly Schauer and Susan Olson are up for election April 2 as well.

Schauer and Susan Olson filed nomination papers by the January 2 deadline, and Anne Schieber also turned in nomination papers for village trustee.

Gunnufson was appointed to the village board in 2012 to serve the remainder of the term created by the resignation of Village Trustee Mike Laska.

Mark Halpin and Rick Johnson also serve on the Colfax Village Board.

Following the latest filing deadline, five candidates have filed nominations for four trustee positions on the Colfax Village Board, and two of the five candidates also have filed nomination papers for village president.

Gunnufson’s position is a one-year term that will begin April 16, 2013 and will end April 15, 2014.

The Colfax Messenger will be providing questionnaires to the candidates for village trustee and village president and will begin running profiles of the candidates in February.
