Bulldog grapplers finish 4-1 at Osceola tournament

OSCEOLA – The Boyceville wrestling team traveled to Osceola on Saturday morning where they wrestled St. Croix Central’s varsity and junior varsity, Barron, Clear Lake and Cumberland.
The Bulldogs were 4-1 as a team on the day with their only loss being to the St. Croix Central varsity team.
The first team dual and win was against Central’s junior varsity team who lost to the Bulldogs 6-78 after the Bulldogs had 11 pins out of 14 matches and two forfeits for an added 12 points.
Receiving pins for the Bulldogs were Dylan Lamm, Dominic Olson. Wyatt Hansen, Bryor Hellmann, Logan McAbee-Thomas, Josh Cormican, Tyler Lamm, Zach Sutliff, Jake Lake, Sawyer Swenson and James Lindo.
The second dual had similar results as the Bulldogs put the beat down on the Barron Golden Bears 72-6.
The first match started at 138 lbs. with Olson who pinned Tyler Guski early in the second period. Hansen then faced off against Tim Sandman and won by a 9-0 decision.
The Bulldogs then went on a pinning streak with Hellmann, McAbee-Thomas and Cormican collecting 18 points for the team.
Also collecting wins for the team were Tyler Lamm who won by decision of 17-9 over Matt Seames, Sutliff received a forfeit, Lake pinned Casey Brown in the opening seconds, Wolfe pinned Quincy Stephens, Sawyer Swenson received a forfeit, Lindo pinned Alex Myers and Dylan Lamm pinned Matt Gordon.
The Golden Bears’ only points were scored after Jake Erickson was pinned by senior heavy weight Casey Brown.
The cake walk was over in the third dual against Clear Lake as the Bulldogs barely pulled off a 36-35 win over the Warriors.
The first match started at 145 lbs. with Hansen losing to Mitch Paulson on a 9-1 decision. Hellmann then lost to Erik Ullrich on a 10-2 decision.
The Bulldogs scored their first points through the work of state qualifier, Cormican, who pinned fellow senior Tyler Strenke in the first period.
McAbee-Thomas then pinned Mitch Lien in the first period as well which put the Bulldogs in the lead 12-8.
The Warriors Garrett Paulson and Chant LaBlanc put their team back in the lead after pinning Tyler Lamm and Zach Sutliff.
At 220 lbs., Erickson received a forfeit after Nate Kelly moved up to heavyweight and was pinned by Lake in the third period, which put the Bulldog’s ahead 24-20.
The Bulldogs would continue to control the lead after Wolfe won by a 11-6 decision and Brock Swenson had a forfeit.
However, the intensity would grow after Sawyer Swenson and Lindo were pinned which put the score at 33-32. Dylan Lamm would then lose by a decision of 6-2 which gave the Warriors a two point lead.
It was then up to Olson whose experience as the senior shined through for the Bulldogs as he pulled off a win against sophomore Andy Colbeth with 9-4 decision.
The Bulldogs final team win was against the Cumberland Beavers, which was a fairly close match-up with Boyceville winning 43-36.
The dual started at 152 lbs. with Hellmann pinning senior Cody Fillion in the opening minute of the match.
The Bulldogs would then jump to an 18-0 lead after McAbee-Thomas pinned Jake Bickle and Cormican pinned Chris Ritchie, both in the first period.
However, the Beavers quickly knotted the score at 18-18 after Sutliff was pinned by Damen Feiertag, Jaylen Lansin received a forfeit at 195 lbs. and Erickson was pinned by Ben Stone. They then took the lead after Lake was pinned by Tanner Grant.
Then Wolfe received a forfeit, Brock Swenson pinned Drew Rihn and Sawyer Swenson pinned Lucas Graf to put the score at 36-24.
The Beavers scored their final points after Lindo was pinned in the second period and Dylan Lamm in the first period which knotted the score at 36-36.
The Bulldogs earned the lead and the victory after Olson won by a decision of 11-9 and Hansen won by a decision of 11-3.
The final dual of the day ended for the Bulldogs with a 30-43 loss against Central’s varsity team which is stacked with seniors this season.
McAbee-Thomas started at 160 lbs. against Brian Gibb and lost after being pinned early in the first period.
Cormican put the Bulldogs on the board after wrestling senior Carl Moll and winning by a decision of just 2-1.
Tyler Lamm then was pinned by Cody Nyhagen, Sutliff was pinned by Kyle Aaaby, Lake was pinned by Delfino Carrasco and Erickson was pinned by Austin Edison which put the Panther’s ahead 30-3.
Wolfe then pinned Aaron Smrz, but Brock Swenson lost by a 13-1 decision and Sawyer Swenson was pinned which continued to push the Panthers’ lead even further.
The Bulldogs gained some momentum after Lindo went round and round with Max Kaul until finally pinning him in the third period.
Dylan Lamm then lost to Ryan Gulich by a 7-0 decision, which was the Panthers’ final points scored.
Closing the score gap was Olson who pinned Kyle Larson, Hansen who won by a decision of 6-4 over Trenten Smith and Hellmann who pinned Nathan Bringgold for an added 15 points.
The Bulldogs wrestled Tuesday evening against Chetek-Weyer/Prairie Farm and will wrestle at home on Thursday, December 20 against Ladysmith starting at 7:00 p.m.
