By Kelsie Hoitomt

GLENWOOD CITY – The Lady Hilltoppers had one game this past week on Thursday evening against the Plum City Blue Devils who they beat 49-40.

The Toppers played their best game in the first quarter, scoring 18 points and holding the Blue Devils to just five points.

The momentum seemed to fade away in the second and third quarter as the girls only scored a combined 14 points. This resulted in the Blue Devils taking their first lead of the game with the score 32-34 going into the fourth quarter.

The Toppers regained their lead after scoring 17 points in the final quarter. The majority of the points were from successful free throws. Jen Kopacz peaked at the right time yet again as she drained two triples and Kristie Knops had one which aided in the Toppers’ victory.

Kopacz was the Hilltoppers’ leading scorer of the night with 16 points from two triples, two deuces and she was six for seven at the free throw line.

The Toppers’ captain Janessa Ullom was a threat under the net as she scored 14 points from six deuces and was two for two at the line.

Also scoring for the Toppers were Kelsie Knops with six points, Moriah Kuehndorf and Kristie Knops each with five points, Olivia Weidling with two points and Mackenzie Wink had a point.

The Toppers had plenty of opportunities at the free throw line as they 24 attempts with 15 of those being made.

The Blue Devils were only allowed nine attempts at the foul line, but seven of those were successful.

“I feel that we are playing well at times, but need to be more consistent in our play. We have yet to put together four quarters of solid basketball. Our next three opponents, Chippewa Falls McDonell, Baldwin-Woodville and Colfax all played in the WIAA sectional tournaments last season and return nearly all their players so needless to say we will have to play our best ball to compete with them,” shared coach Justin Kuehndorf.

The Hilltoppers have a break in play until the Holiday Tournament at home on December 27 and 28. Their next conference game will be in Colfax against the Vikings on January 3 starting at 7:30 p.m.
