Tax levy set, donations accepted by Boyceville School Board

BOYCEVILLE — The school board set the mill rate at 10.67 to support the needs of the school district in the coming year. The levy against the taxable property within the district includes $2,022,153 for Fund 10; $46,477 for Fund 38; Fund 39 at $995,352; and $60,000 for Fund 80.

Fund 10 is the school’s general fund with planned total expenses of $8,927,052. Fund number 38 is the non-referendum debt service while Fund 39 is the referendum approved debt and Fund 80 is for community service.

District Administrator Kevin Sipple explained to the board that state aids are expected to be up slightly, “about $5,000’’, he said. He also indicated that the mill rate is just over three percent less than the current year and, noted that the figures are what were presented at the school’s annual meeting.

The board accepted six grants and donations totaling over $7,800 at their October 23rd meeting.

The money comes from a $1,200 grant from The Women’s Giving Circle of Dunn County to be used for the Resilience/Health Realization Book Program. A $2,000 donation was accepted from the 2017 Alfalfa Fest proceeds and another $120.48 from the Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive for the benefit of the Special Education Program.

Also accepted were two $1,000 grants from Murray & Madonna Hostetter, these two have matching funds from the Northwestern Mutual. One of the grants is for the Science Olympiad Program while the other is to the student meal programs. Sipple explained that with this the school has funds to help needy children who come to school and do not have the resources to purchase meals.

In other matters the board listen to a report from two six-grade girls about the BE Team at the Tiffany Creek School. The two, Mariah Marvin and Cora Leslie with the help of a slide show informed the board about their activities at the school.

The board also heard from the officers of the PTA who informed the board about their activities and noted that their main goal was to increase the membership of the group. The four officers who addressed the board were Kati Mrdutt, Joanna Cole, Amanda Rydel and Leana Stewart. They noted that the organization has 24 members at present, most of which are teachers, they said. But they are asking parents and others to join the PTA.

Elementary Principal Nick Kaiser reported to the board about the Outdoor Family Night and the student/parent conference, both had “great attendance,” he noted. He also touched on the 5th graders going on an overnight to Beaver Creek this week. He addressed the annual Veterans Day Program to be held at Tiffany Creek on November 10 at 1:30 p.m.

During his report to the board, Middle/High School Principal Steve Glocke express his appreciation for the compassion that his staff and the student body showed after the death of a student last week. He praised the guidance counselors by saying, “they did a great job of consoling and comforting students and that a local pastor came and talked to kids.” He also noted that a number of students attended the funeral on Monday.

Board President Tim Sempf also gave his expression of gratitude to the staff and administration during this hard time for family, friends and the community.

Bonnie Barker, Director of Special Education/School Psychologist also echoed the feelings of loss and that the school was offered support from the school districts of Menomonie and Colfax.

Glocke also noted about upcoming events including the one act play being put on by the Drama Department this Friday and Saturday. “There is room for 92 guests for each showing,” he noted. His report stated that the National Honor Society will induct new members on November 6th and the Veterans Day event will be at the high school on November 10th at 10:40 a.m.

District Administrator Kevin Sipple made a point to remind everyone that the regular board meeting will be held on Monday, November 6th at 6 p.m. to accommodate the busy mid-November school calendar.

Sipple also reminded the board about the school’s Inclement Weather School Closing Procedures and that they are printed on the inside of the school calendar. He also praised Jim Chich for his work on the school buses, noting that the state patrol had recently completed the yearly inspection and “we had a very clean inspection.”

Sipple noted to the board that they are in the process of refunding the remaining portion of the 2008 bonds. “The school district received an A plus rating from Standard and Poor’s Global Rating.”

The board approved the hiring of Nancy Duval as a part-time custodian. She will replace Lionel Kegen on the 5:30 to 10:30 shift cleaning at the High School/Middle School. They also accepted the resignation of Brent Klefstad as the JV Boys Basketball Coach.
