RUTH M. (NYHUS) SLOTEVIG

Ruth M. (Nyhus) Slotevig, died Monday April 16, 2018 at the Ramsey County Care Center in Maplewood, MN.

Ruth was born November 17, 1926 to Peter and Beatrice (Gwaltney) Nyhus.

She grew up on a farm near Glenwood City, WI. Following graduation  and turning 18 she and childhood boyfriend Orville Slotevig moved to  Minneapolis, MN, where she rented a room from a lady she worked with at the Honeywell Plant. They later returned to Wisconsin for a year only to return to St. Paul. MN to work for a cookie factory and the armory during the war. Ruth and Orville married February 25, 1946. This is when she started working at Montgomery Wards in the mail order department and they lived in the upstairs of a duplex they shared with Orville’s older sister Myrtle and her family. Ruth stopped working in June of 1952 when daughter Sharon was born and 1.5 years later they purchased a house in southern Maplewood where Ruth resided for 66 years until her final days.

Ruth went back to Wards until November 1954 when Roger was born. When her mother came to help with the children she returned to Wards until they closed the mail order department. Ruth started a cleaning business where she would clean banks and she also cared for  a couple until their passing or they went to the nursing home. She enjoyed being outside gardening and playing with the children and neighborhood kids. She would do her baking on Saturday morning; chocolate chip cookies, brownies, bread, rolls and put them in the freezer for company. But as Sharon and Roger got older they would raid the freezer. Ruth was a beautiful person inside and out, she was a sharp witted, hard working, loving and caring person. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Ruby McCarthy and Shirley Jansen, brothers Stanley “Stub” Nyhus, and Orville Slotevig, sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
