Mounders crush Cardinals

SPRING VALLEY — The Elk Mound boys’ basketball team has certainly learned how to adapt to circumstances beyond their control this past week, starting with a postponement of the game at Mondovi Jan. 29 due to bad weather.

Expecting to stay home to take on the Spring Valley Cardinals Feb. 1, a change of venue occurred as a water main broke in the village, causing problems in town and at the school, so the game was moved to Spring Valley. The Mounders showed it didn’t matter where they played as they held the Cardinals to single digit scoring in all four quarters and ran past them 66-23. The win keeps them undefeated at 16-0. (The Mondovi game will be played Feb. 4, and another game postponed against Plum City back in December is rescheduled for Feb. 11 at Plum City).

Holding just an 11-6 lead after the first quarter, the Mounders erupted for 23 points in the second for a 34-11 halftime lead. Nick Heit collected eight second quarter points on a pair of triples sandwiched around two free throws, Zac Doll added seven points on two deuces and a trey, Ryan Bridges dropped in a bucket and a couple of free tosses and Austin Hanson and Hunter Dicus both added a basket. Heit added seven more points in the third quarter with his third triple of the night and two shots from close range to help the Mounders add 16 points to their total while shutting down the Cardinals with five points.

Coming off the bench, Adam Gottschalk and Logan Strom combined for 11 of the Mounders 16 fourth quarter points with Strom scoring on three deuces and Gottschalk picking up five points on three free throws and a basket from the paint.

“We played hard tonight and were solid on defense throughout the game,” Elk Mound coach Chris Hahn said. “We did a great job communicating and working hard to be in the correct position. We were able to extend our lead and get a lot of players involved.”

Heit led the team in scoring with 17 points while Doll added 13. The team finished 10 for 13 at the charity stripe.
