Lady Vikings swing into season with home win over Hilltoppers

By Cara L. Dempski

COLFAX — The sun was bright, but it was still breezy and cold when the Vikings took the field to open their 2017 season.

The Colfax softball team welcomed the Glenwood City Hilltoppers to their field April 6 for Colfax’s season- and home-opener, which was also the Dunn-St. Croix opener for both teams. The Vikings looked a little shaky the first few innings defensively, but then pulled out a 14-4 win to go 1-0 for the season and conference.

“We had a good game,” head coach Richard Meredith said. “Overall, we played pretty good defense, but we have a few things to clean up. We, as a coaching staff, were very happy with what we saw.”

The Viking girls were hot at the plate and running bases, picking up three runs alone in first inning. In fact, the only inning the Colfax did not score a few runs was the seventh, and that was because officials enforced the 10-run rule and called the game at the end of the sixth.

Mikaela Leibfried, Tamara Huffman and Kameri Meredith kicked off the Vikings’ offensively with three runs in the first, and in the second. Junior Becca Lee was the only Colfax player to cross home plate in the third, but Huffman and Meredith scored again in the fourth.

Dailyn Mortenson, MaKayla Mattson and Leibfried opened the fifth with a trio of runs, and Lee and Mortenson scored two more runs in the sixth.

Huffman pitched six innings for a 2.33 ERA. She logged eight strikeouts, three walks, and four hits. Leibfried led the team with three RBIs in five at-bats.

The Vikings were scheduled for an April 10 meeting with the Boyceville Bulldogs, but results were not available prior to publication. Colfax will take the field April 13 at Plum City before hitting the road to Mondovi April 18.
